Introduction

Introduction

The ELFIQ Operating System (EOS) is the operating system installed on all Link Balancer (LBX) units. The EOS enables link balancing and bandwidth management capabilities on LBX hardware and on VLBX virtual devices to provide business continuity and enhanced network performance.

This document summarizes the upgrade requirements and the upgrade process and is intended for use by trained partners and end-users.

Upgrade Process

Use this section to understand the upgrade tasks.

Before you begin

Note

Units running on EOS 4.4.1 or earlier cannot be upgraded to EOS 4.5.0 using ELFIQ Central or Web Management Interface. To upgrade the system, A complete flash upgrade must be done from the command line to avoid the EOS update utility failing. See Upgrading to EOS 4.5.0.

  • If you have a Legacy license for your system, we recommend that you install the license before proceeding with the upgrade procedure.
  • If you have a high availability implementation (two units in a failover), ensure that both units are the same model and are operating on the same firmware version. We recommend that you upgrade both units in the same maintenance window.
  • Obtain the upgrade file. If you have a valid LinkCare maintenance plan and your unit is running Release 3.8.5 or higher, you can obtain the license through Central. Otherwise, contact support@adaptiv-networks.com to receive the versions required for your upgrade path.

Upgrade Tasks

Complete the tasks in the table below.

TaskDescription
Back up your current configuration

If your unit is connected to Central, it is backed up automatically, and you do not need to take action. If your unit is not connected to Central, choose one of the following methods:

Save the configuration from all the available modules in your Link Balancer. The modules loaded depend on the Link Balancer model and the license that you have.

Apply a hotfix

If you are upgrading from an EOS version between 3.1.70 and 3.5.1, you need to install a hotfix. Choose one of the following methods:

Install the license

If your unit is connected to Central, the license is installed automatically, and you do not need to take action. If your unit is not connected to Central, choose one of the following methods:

Upgrade the firmware

Choose one of the following methods:

For units running firmware versions 3.8.7 or higher, we recommend using the ELFIQ Central console (https://central.elfiq.com) to perform the upgrade.
Reconfigure the license
If you are upgrading from a version before 3.5.3, you need to manually configure the license key after the upgrade is complete. Choose one of the following methods:
