This page explains how tags and groups organize VMs in the VM Management Panel, how to filter VMs, and how to add or remove tags.
Tags and Virtual Machines
Tags are an organizational feature used to group and quickly filter VMs on the system. Tags are optional at the time of VM creation, and they can be added or removed at any time after VM creation.
There are two types of tags: - A group tag (shortened to group) — always the first tag assigned to the VM. - An informational tag (shortened to tag) — any additional tags after the group, also used in the VM filter feature.
Tags are displayed in a comma-separated list below the VM name, description, and IP address on the VM card.
Tags cannot contain spaces. A space or the return key will create the entry as a new tag.
When removing tags, the first tag will always be the group, so deleting the group will cause the next tag in line to become the group.
Groups are used to organize VMs into logical containers in the VM Management Panel, and group containers can be expanded or collapsed for ease of management.
Any VMs that do not have a tag will be sorted into a separate “untagged” group container at the top of the VM Management Panel screen. Group containers are sorted in alphabetical order by the group tag name.
Tags and groups are also used to populate the VM Management Panel filter box.
Filter Virtual Machines
As more VMs are added to the system, the filter bar at the top right of the VM Management Panel allows you to quickly find VMs by various aspects.
When the drop-down is clicked, the filter bar will offer default items that can be used to filter all VMs: RUNNING and SHUTOFF options appear at the top, followed by a list of existing groups and tags in alphabetical order.
You can also type in your search criteria, and the filter bar then searches through everything associated with the VM card, including: VM name, description, group, tags, IP, and the node the VM may be running on.
It is possible to use AND and OR operators in the filter bar. Include a space between words to trigger the AND operator, or a comma between words to trigger the OR operator.
It is also possible to perform actions on a group of filtered VMs. See the Manage All or Manage Filtered Virtual Machines section for more details.
Add or Remove Tags
VM tags can be changed at any time, whether the VM is powered on or off.
- Select the Edit VM (wrench) icon from the Summary screen of the VM card, which opens a popup dialog.
Add: Type tags into the Tags box or select previous tags from the dropdown menu, then click Update.
Remove: Click the “x” in the tag’s colored box, then click Update.
