IP Configurations
Adaptiv Networks offers options to set up a private or public IP configuration at customer site. This section describes different types of IP configurations and how they can be utilized with regards to customer requirements.
To understand how each IP configuration works, it is first necessary to learn more about the type of IP addresses available for configuration.
Types of IP Addresses
- Public IP Address: A public IP address is mostly assigned to a device that is directly accessible over the internet. Such addresses are globally unique and typically provided by internet service providers (ISPs). These addresses are used by devices outside a local network to access services like web browsing, emails, and online gaming.
- Private IP Address: A private IP address is usually assigned to devices within a private network such as a home or office network. These addresses are used for internal communications and are not directly reachable through the internet. Common private IP address ranges include 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255, 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255, and 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255.
- Static IP Address: A static IP address is a fixed, unchanging IP address manually assigned to a device, ensuring consistent, reliable connectivity. This is essential for servers, hosting websites, and networked devices requiring permanent addresses for remote access, enabling stable communication without the need for frequent reconfiguration.
- Dynamic IP Address: A dynamic IP address is a temporary, changeable IP address assigned to a device by a DHCP server. It changes periodically or when the device reconnects, optimizing resource use and simplifying network management. This approach is commonly used for consumer devices and internet service providers.
Adaptiv SD-WAN solutions offer the following three IP configuration options.
- Private IP Configuration: This type of IP configuration is best for simplicity, security, and cost-effectiveness. It is ideal for internal networks where direct internet access is not required.
- Static Public IP at LAN: This IP configuration is suitable for scenarios requiring direct public IP access. It provides direct accessibility and eliminates double NATing issues but comes with higher security risks and costs.
- Static Public IP at Gateway: This IP configuration balances accessibility and security. It is ideal for internet-facing services with moderate cost implications.
