This page explains how to use a snapshot in SC//HyperCore™ HyperVisor to restore a whole VM as a new clone, or to recover individual files by cloning a virtual disk to another VM.
- The Admin role, or a role with the VM Clone and VM Block Device Clone permissions (Backup, or VM Create & Edit).
- A snapshot of the VM from before the point you want to restore.
Restore a Virtual Machine from a Snapshot
The snapshot restore feature creates a child VM that is identical to the parent at the time the snapshot was created. The child VM must have a unique name, and it will be completely independent from the parent VM.
- Open the Snapshots and Replication screen on the VM card.
- Click the Snapshots icon, the latest snapshot date and time, or the current snapshot count. A popup dialog will appear listing all snapshots from newest to oldest with their assigned labels.
- Click the Clone VM icon to the right of the snapshot you would like to restore, which opens a Clone VM popup dialog.
- Edit the Name or Description field as needed. The Name must be unique.
- Click Clone to save and create the new VM from the snapshot image.
Restore Individual Files Using Virtual Disk Cloning
The virtual disk cloning feature creates an exact replica of the virtual disk from the point in time the VM snapshot was taken, and the replica is independent from the original disk. The new virtual disk can be attached to any SC//HyperCore VM on the system, whether that VM is powered on or off.
- Open the Snapshots screen of the VM card containing the disk you wish to clone.
- Click Snapshots to open the list of VM snapshots.
- Use the dropdown arrow to the left of the desired snapshot to expand the snapshot image options.
- Find the appropriate virtual disk from the list.
Device ID is the first 8 characters of the SC//HyperCore virtual disk ID. Current Mount Point(s) shows current disk letters assigned. Allocation is the current consumed capacity. Capacity is the total possible size. The Clone and Mount to VM dropdown allows a virtual disk to be live added to any VM, provided the guest OS supports this feature.
- Select the VM you wish to clone the virtual disk to from the dropdown list.
- Click the Mount Device to the Selected VM icon (disk with + icon). The virtual disk will then immediately be cloned to the selected VM. You can now access the disk contents and copy any files as needed through the guest OS.
Additional tasks and/or a complete power cycle may be required depending on the VM OS.
