Live Migrate a Virtual Machine

The SC//HyperCore™ HyperVisor is designed to always assign VMs to the node with the most free resources when the VM is powered on. You may wish to organize VMs after they are powered on for performance or testing. VMs can only be live migrated when they are powered on.

  1. Open the Summary screen on the VM card.
  2. Click the Move VM (stacked boxes and arrow) icon.

Live Migrate:

  • The source node will become darkened and available destination nodes will be highlighted.
  • Click the destination node in the System Display Panel. The VM will be live migrated.

Cancel Live Migration: Click the Move VM icon again. The live migration will be canceled.

Using Live Migration to Set Virtual Machine Affinity

The SC//HyperCore system will set an implicit affinity to the destination node for a live migrated VM and set the source node as the backup node in case of node failure. This allows you to define specific VM placement preferences to suit performance or interoperability requirements.

Using live migration to set VM affinity also allows you to ensure that certain VMs run together on the same node (VM-to-VM affinity), or that certain VMs do not run together (VM-to-VM anti-affinity). For example, you may wish to ensure domain controllers are not running on the same node, or keep two VMs on the same node for performance reasons.
