AOS Release Notes v8.3
The Adaptiv OS (AOS) release notes highlight new features and enhancements as well as critical bugs addressed in each release.
Release 8.3.0
Release Date: July 14, 2025
Features and Enhancements
- Support for Packet Fragmentation – This release introduces a major enhancement to Adaptiv OS with the addition of packet fragmentation. Packet fragmentation enables the system to break down larger IP packets into smaller fragments, allowing them to traverse network segments with varying maximum transmission unit (MTU) sizes more efficiently.
- Improved primary link recovery mechanism – Improved the primary link recovery process by implementing a new configurable mechanism that optimizes the flow of data when the primary link recovers from a failure. With this mechanism, once the primary link is stable, all existing flows on the backup link are automatically transitioned back to the primary link. Additionally, users can specify a timer that allows them to specify the time for the traffic to transition back to the primary link when it recovers from failure and becomes stable. This significantly reduces data usage on costly backup options such as LTE, resulting in lower operational costs.
- Support for Virtual Edge deployment via Cloud-init – Streamlined the deployment process for virtual devices by adding support for Virtual Edge deployment via Cloud-init. With this capability, users can configure the serial number and authentication secret directly through Cloud-init, eliminating the need for manual login to perform these tasks. In addition to configuring serial number and authentication secret, it also adds the following capabilities:
- Configure static IP configurations
- Modify a user’s authentication password and specify passwords for the web GUI user, web GUI admins, and Adaptiv shell account
- Define ssh keys to be copied to ~adaptiv/.ssh/authorized_keys
- Link quality statistics for all-breakout sites – This release introduces support for displaying link quality statistics and metrics for sites configured with all-breakout traffic setup (all traffic passes through internet instead of gateway). With this enhancement, users can now monitor link quality and health for such sites, gaining insights into connectivity and link health even when the traffic does not traverse the gateway.
- Ability to configure multiple LAN ports and bridged LAN ports – Added the ability to configure multiple LAN ports on hardware devices, which means users can now configure LAN ports in addition to the designated/default LAN ports. These LAN ports can be setup in two modes: assigning individual subnets to each port or bridging multiple ports to support single LAN subnet. Note that the LAN port bridge is currently not supported for subnets that employ VLAN tags.
- Ability to change admin password via CLI – Authorized users can now change the admin password directly through CLI.
- Edge device GUI features and enhancements:
- Addition of Firewall Configuration to device GUI – AOS v8.3.0 introduces a new Firewall Configuration feature in the device GUI, enabling users to create policies that either allow or deny traffic to and from the device. With this feature, users can control the traffic flow on the device and fine tune it to allow or deny certain flows on the device.
- Gateway selection view – In v8.3.0 introduces the ability to configure a preferred data center, giving customers more control over selecting the gateways their devices connect to. This helps to avoid issues caused by incorrect automatic geo-location detection. Customers can even specify days and times for tunnel reconfiguration, thus avoiding the risk of downtime during business hours. Additionally, customers can view the expected latency to nearby data centers or gateways enabling more informed gateway selection.
- Network Status section – The new Network Status section provides users with key insights into their network. It displays information such as the network name, network ID, and a list of connected users, routers, and registered endpoints.
- Enhancements to Endpoint Details section – The Endpoint Details section has been enhanced to include additional information, such as Geo Restrictions.
- Enhancements to System Configuration page – This release adds the capability for administrators to change password directly through the device GUI. It also enables the admin users to modify the serial number and authentication secret.
Caveat
- For new sites, the primary link recovery mechanism stability timer is set to a default value of 120 seconds. While this default value is retrievable from ACN, it is not displayed in the CPE terminal using the
aos cfg getcommand unless the timer has been modified from its default setting.
Addressed Issues
- 351 – When primary WAN link quality degrades, the traffic path selection does not automatically migrate the traffic to primary WAN link.
- 504 – In SD-WAN deployment, the network quality steering algorithm may be applied only to flows starting from one site.
- 551 – Fixed an issue where users were unable to perform ping or speed test on an overlay interface that is configured as a backup.
- 603 – Addressed an issue where the link bandwidth settings were not being applied correctly to the device.
- 1603 – An ongoing download flow is switched to the primary link instead of the backup link when the primary link recovers from a link failure.
Open Issues
- 329 – Observed a few instances where the LTE modem switches from primary mode to legacy mode and cannot be reset to primary mode.
- 392 – An internal LTE modem connected to E-40 device will connect to the network, but not transmit data.
- 634 – When DNAT policies are in use, manually configuring the LAN host MTU to a value less than 1500 bytes may result in packets getting dropped.
