Breakout at the Edge Business Use Cases

Breakout at the Edge Business Use Cases

This table illustrates some sample business use cases of the Breakout at the Edge feature.

Use Case
Explanation

Optimized Bandwidth Allocation for Branch Offices

A company with multiple branch offices needs to manage network resources efficiently while ensuring reliable connectivity for critical applications.
→ By implementing local breakout, low-priority traffic can be sent directly to the internet, reducing congestion on the SD-WAN tunnel.
→ When considering tunnel sizing, it is essential to measure peak and average usage rigorously to avoid congestion. Adaptiv recommends selecting an SD-WAN tunnel that matches the available bandwidth at any given time.

Security Segmentation for Sensitive Traffic

Certain industries, such as healthcare and finance, handle sensitive data that requires stringent security measures.
→ By directing sensitive traffic through the secure SD-WAN tunnel while allowing non-sensitive traffic to go directly to the internet via local breakout, organizations can ensure that critical data remains protected while still optimizing network performance.
→ Unknown traffic cannot be broken out at the edge, and in the case of Network Protect, breakout at the edge is disabled for security reasons.
Avoiding Double Encryption for SaaS Applications
Certain SaaS applications already encrypt traffic end-to-end.
→ Routing this traffic through the SD-WAN overlay adds unnecessary overhead and may cause performance degradation.
→ Local breakout allows these encrypted flows to bypass the SD-WAN tunnel, reducing latency and avoiding double encryption.
Controlled Breakout for Known Low-Priority Traffic
Non-critical traffic, such as software updates or streaming media, can consume significant bandwidth.
→ By breaking out only known, low-priority traffic at the edge, organizations can free up SD-WAN resources for critical applications.
→ Security policies remain enforced for unknown or high-risk traffic.
