The WAN Failover tab displays the status of the WAN Failover application running on the SC//AcuVigil™ edge security device (ESD). WAN Failover is a high-availability dual WAN network manager that monitors primary and secondary internet connections and automatically routes traffic through the available connection. Use this tab to check the current active connection, review carrier availability history, and configure failover settings.
The tab shows the connection status, failover history, and settings for this site. For an overview of the application, see WAN Failover.
Application description: High-availability dual WAN network manager.
Supported ESD models: MG3, SG1v1, SG2v1, XG1v1, VG
Layout
The WAN Failover tab has a standard app header and three sub-views: Status, History, and Settings. The default sub-view is Status.
Header
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| App icon | WAN Failover app icon. Decorative. |
| WAN Failover | App name / block title. |
| Subtitle | "High-availability dual WAN network manager." Static descriptor. |
| Version | Package version string (for example, Ver.P1F000). |
| Status | Link. Switches to the Status sub-view. |
| History | Link. Switches to the History sub-view. |
| Settings | Link. Switches to the Settings sub-view. |
Status banner
Informational or alert banners appear below the header. These INFO messages mean the primary connection is working but the secondary (backup) connection isn't available, so the site can't fail over:
| Banner | Meaning |
|---|---|
INFO: There appears to be no secondary connection to the Internet configured at this site. |
WAN Failover is running, but only one WAN connection is present. |
INFO: The secondary connection at this site did not initialize correctly. |
The secondary interface failed to start when the ESD booted. |
INFO: The secondary connection at this site failed connectivity tests. |
The secondary connection is up but can't reach the test addresses. |
Note: INFO doesn't mean the site is running on its secondary connection. While traffic uses the secondary, the site shows the status chosen in the Status When Using Secondary setting. |
Status sub-view
The default sub-view. Shows one card for each WAN connection at the site. The card for the connection that's currently carrying traffic has a green border.
WAN connection card
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Number | The WAN number (for example, 1 or 2). |
| ISP name | The name of the internet service provider for this connection. |
| State | Active if traffic is currently routed through this connection, or Standby if it isn't. |
| IP address | The IP address of this connection (for example, 203.0.113.10). |
| Tests passed | The number of connectivity tests this connection passed, in the format N/N tests passed. |
| Explanatory sentence | A plain-language summary of the connection's state. For example, "The network interface was activated at boot and has never been made inactive" or "The network interface passed connectivity check. Traffic is not currently routed through this connection". |
History sub-view
Renders two time-series graphs of WAN failover activity. Controls are the same as other history views: Period dropdown (1 Day / 7 Days / 30 Days), Start Date input, Go button, and Reset Zoom per graph.
Carrier availability graph
Plots the availability state of WAN carriers at each 5-minute sample point.
| Color | Status | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Orange (#fdc689) |
CRITICAL | No carrier available. |
Light blue (#98daf4) |
INFO | One carrier available (primary or secondary only). |
Green (#7cc576) |
OK | Both carriers available. |
Legend labels: Secondary Only, Primary Only, Both, No Data.
Active interface graph
Plots which interface was carrying traffic at each sample point.
| Color | Status | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
Orange (#fdc689) |
CRITICAL | No active interface. |
Green (#7cc576) |
OK | Primary interface is active. |
Yellow (#faf27a) |
WARNING | Secondary interface is active (failover in progress). |
Legend labels: Primary, Secondary, No Data.
Settings sub-view
Note: Scale Computing manages these settings as part of the managed service. You can view them here. To request a change, contact Scale Computing Support: open a ticket in the SC//AcuVigil dashboard, email team@scalecomputing.com, or call (512) 687-7401. |
Controls how WAN Failover tests the connections and when it switches between them.
| Field | Type | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensitivity | Dropdown | Normal, Low | How sensitive failover is to connectivity test results. |
| Test IP Addresses | Multi-line text box | One IP address per line | The addresses the application tests to check connectivity, for example public DNS resolvers. Select the help icon next to the field for more information. |
| Use Ping Tests | Checkbox | Checked / Unchecked | Whether the application uses ping tests to the test IP addresses. |
| Failover to Secondary If | Dropdown | Any test fails, Majority of tests fail, All tests fail | How many tests must fail before traffic moves to the secondary connection. |
| Failback to Primary | Radio buttons | As soon as it comes back up; After it has been back up for [N] minutes; If Secondary fails | When traffic returns to the primary connection after a failover. For the second option, enter the number of minutes (for example, 15). |
| Status When Using Secondary | Dropdown | OK, WARNING, CRITICAL | The site status the SC//AcuVigil dashboard shows while traffic is routed through the secondary connection. |
| Update Settings | Button | — | Saves the settings and applies them to the ESD. |
| Delete Config | Link | — | Deletes the WAN Failover configuration for this site. |
Alerts
The Alerts section lists the alerts set up for WAN Failover. Scale Computing sets up alerts as part of the managed service; to request one, contact Scale Computing Support.
Note: A settings change applies to the live site right away. A change to the failover or failback settings can move traffic between WAN connections. |
What to look for
- INFO banner "no secondary connection configured" — confirms the site is running WAN Failover but only has a single WAN. Failover is not possible in this state.
- Active = Primary — normal healthy state.
- Active = Secondary (the secondary WAN card shows Active) — failover has occurred. The primary WAN has failed.
- Carrier Availability graph shows orange — both WAN connections were down during that period. The site was completely offline.
- Tests passed ratio declining on Primary — intermittent primary WAN issues. May precede a full failover.
