SC//AcuVigil™ is Scale Computing's managed network service for organizations that operate many sites, such as retail stores, convenience stores and fuel stations, restaurants, and other distributed locations. It connects, secures, and monitors every site's network from one cloud-based dashboard, backed by Scale Computing's 24/7 network operations center (NOC).
How SC//AcuVigil works
SC//AcuVigil has four parts that work together:
- An edge security device (ESD) at each site. The ESD is the site's firewall and gateway. Every device on the site's network, such as POS terminals, fuel controllers, tank gauges, cameras, and office PCs, connects through it. For the available models, see Scale Computing edge security devices.
- The SC//AcuVigil dashboard. A web portal where you see every site at a glance, open any site to check its network, devices, and applications, and run reports across all your sites. See Finding your way around the dashboard.
- SC//AcuVigil applications. Applications that run on the ESD and add capabilities site by site, such as backup internet connections, secure payment connections, fuel and tank monitoring, POS integration, and remote access for POS vendors. See SC//AcuVigil applications.
- Scale Computing's network operations center (NOC). A team that monitors your sites around the clock and works with you when something needs attention. See Working with Scale Computing.
How SC//AcuVigil protects a site
SC//AcuVigil controls network access device by device. The ESD blocks any traffic that isn't explicitly allowed. A device that connects to the site's network shows up as unregistered and gets no access until someone registers it and assigns it a policy. The policy allows only the traffic that device needs, for example internet access only, local network access only, or access to VPN tunnels.
The site's network is also divided into segments (VLANs), so that, for example, payment devices are kept apart from office PCs and guest Wi-Fi. For how registration and policies work, see Managing devices.
What you can do with SC//AcuVigil
| Goal | How SC//AcuVigil helps | Learn more |
|---|---|---|
| See the health of every site | Every site appears as a colored tile that shows its current status. Open any site for details about its network, devices, and applications, and its status history. | Site status colors, Site status page |
| Control what's on your network | Register devices, change their settings and policies, and see unregistered or non-responding devices across all sites. Scale Computing creates and maintains your firewall policies. | Managing devices, Firewall policies, Device Manager reports |
| Meet PCI DSS requirements | Device-level access control and segmentation, external and internal vulnerability scans, connection logging, and reports for your audits. | Registering new devices, Security and compliance applications |
| Give vendors secure remote access | AcuLink™ remote access opens a connection to a device at a site only when an authorized user turns it on in the dashboard. | Remote access applications |
| Keep sites online | Fail over to a backup internet connection automatically, including built-in or external cellular, balance traffic across several connections, route traffic over the SC//Connect™ SD-WAN, or pair two ESDs for high availability. | Failover and load balancing, Networking applications |
| Manage the switches at a site | See every port, lock ports and MAC addresses, power cycle PoE devices such as cameras and access points, and restart switches remotely. | SmartSwitch, Power over Ethernet (PoE) in SmartSwitch |
| Filter web access | Limit internet access by category, allowlist, or blocklist. | Web Filter |
| Contain a security incident | Isolate a site remotely by cutting its devices off from the internet, then restore access after the problem is resolved. | AcuLock |
| Monitor store equipment | Watch door sensors, temperature sensors (with daily HACCP temperature reports), and fuel tank levels and deliveries. The site's status changes when something needs attention. | Environment monitoring applications, Fuel applications |
| Connect to payment, fuel, and loyalty partners | Applications relay transactions and data securely between the site and partners such as payment processors and fuel suppliers. | SC//AcuVigil applications |
| Stay informed | Applications provide reports you can view, download, or have emailed on a schedule, and some applications send alerts. | Running and scheduling application reports |
| Control who can do what | Give each user a role that decides what they can see and change. | Managing users |
| Know the hardware at each site | Each site runs an edge security device (ESD): an MG3, SG1v1, SG2v1, or XG1v1 appliance, or the VG virtual machine. | Scale Computing edge security devices |
Working with Scale Computing
SC//AcuVigil combines self-service and managed support. You can monitor, configure, and manage your sites yourself in the dashboard. Scale Computing's network operations center (NOC) monitors your sites 24 hours a day, and you can hand off escalations, diagnostics, and troubleshooting to the NOC when you need to.
To contact Scale Computing Support, open a ticket in the SC//AcuVigil dashboard, email team@scalecomputing.com, or call (512) 687-7401. The dashboard also shows tickets that monitoring opens for your sites. See Working with support tickets.
