Device Manager is the SC//AcuVigil™ application that detects every client device on a site's network and manages its security. Each registered device is assigned a local IP address, a named network segment, a security policy, and a status warning level to apply if the device stops responding. Unregistered devices can't reach other networks.
The application is installed automatically on every Scale Computing™ edge security device (ESD), so it's present at every site. It's also enabled automatically for every company, so you can't remove it the way you can remove an optional application.
Features
- Detect devices automatically when they connect to the network, and list them as unregistered until someone registers them
- Register devices, and edit or remove their registrations, from the Devices tab
- Assign each device a policy that controls its traffic; the ESD blocks anything a policy doesn't allow
- Create site policies with whitelisted hosts and services, port forwarding, and redirects
- Report on devices across all your sites, for example registered, unregistered, non-responding, and unrestricted devices
- Add switch management with the SmartSwitch add-on application
Where to find Device Manager
From the Apps menu, select Devices to open the Device Manager page with its reports for all your sites.
For a single site, Device Manager appears on the Devices tab of a site's Site Status page. It has two menu items, Devices and Policies. Devices is the default.
On a site where SmartSwitch is installed and the ESD has managed switches, the same tab is titled SmartSwitch and has two more menu items. For more information, see Extending Device Manager.
Extending Device Manager
You can extend Device Manager with add-on applications, which provide the "enhanced information and local network control for third-party switches" listed in the features.
| Application | What it adds |
|---|---|
| SmartSwitch | Management of layer-two managed switches: per-port detail, port and MAC locking, remote switch restart, and adding switches. Adds the Switches and Settings menus. |
When SmartSwitch is in use, the application title, subtitle, and menu all change, which is why the tab is often called SmartSwitch rather than Device Manager. The underlying application is the same in both cases.
Installation
Device Manager is installed automatically on all Scale Computing ESDs. There's no manual installation step.
System requirements
- Scale Computing ESD: MG3, SG1v1, SG2v1, XG1v1, or VG
- Optional: an IP-enabled smart switch, required only for SmartSwitch
Reports
Device Manager provides reports such as the Registered Devices Report, Device Exceptions Report, Non-Responding Devices Report, and Unregistered Devices Report. To view, download, export, or customize them, see Device Manager reports.
Reference
For a field-level reference of every menu, column, and form control on the Devices tab, in both its Device Manager and SmartSwitch forms, see Devices tab.
