Changing a registered device

After a device is registered, you can change its name, network segment, IP address, device type, firewall policy, and error status, or remove its registration. You make these changes on the site's Devices tab.

Who can change devices

Changing or removing a device registration requires a role with the Edit devices permission: Admin, Installer, Support Manager, Customer Help Desk, Staff, or Vendor CSR. Only users with the Admin role can assign the Unrestricted policy. See Managing user permissions.

Change a device's settings

  1. Open the site's Status page and choose the Devices tab.
  2. From the View dropdown, choose Registered.
  3. Select Edit Devices.

Every registered device at the site opens in one form.

  4. Find the device's row, and change any of these fields:

    Field What to know
Name A name that tells people what the device is and where it is.
Segment The network segment (VLAN) the device belongs to. Put each device on the segment for its purpose, for example POS devices on the POS segment.
IP Address The address the ESD gives the device. A marker shows which addresses are in the segment's DHCP pool.
Device Type The kind of device, for example ATG, Card Reader, or DVR.
Policy The firewall policy that controls the device's traffic. See Firewall policies.
Error Status The status the device raises for the site if it stops responding: None, Info, Warning, or Critical.
  5. Select Update Devices to save your changes, or Cancel to leave without saving.

Important: A change to a device's segment, IP address, or policy changes what the device can reach as soon as it's applied. Check the change against the device's purpose before you save, and make it at a time when a short interruption is acceptable.

Remove a device's registration

Remove a registration when a device has left the site for good.

  1. In the Edit Devices form, select the checkbox in the trash-can column for the device.
  2. Select Update Devices.

After its registration is removed, the device is treated like any unregistered device: if it's still connected, it can't reach other networks and appears in the Unregistered view.

Replace a device

If a new device replaces one that's already registered, for example a replacement printer, you don't need to remove the old registration first. When you register the new device, choose Swap with registered device, and the old device's name, segment, policy, and IP address are copied to it. See Registering new devices.
