High Availability Sites

High Availability Sites

The high availability sites (commonly referred to as HA sites), provide hardware redundancy to maintain continuous network operation during hardware failures. All Edge devices support this feature. The orchestrator supports the capability of creating and deploying high availability sites through service orders.

To configure a high availability (HA) site, you must select the high availability option during site creation. Once a site is designated as HA, several configuration aspects are adjusted to support the HA setup. This includes changes to how LAN and WAN settings are defined, as well as how templates are applied.

LAN Setup

High availability sites supports all three configurations:

  • Private IP – When you apply a private IP configuration to a high availability (HA) site, /29 subnet is the smallest subnet automatically offered to ensure there are enough IP addresses to meet the assignment requirements for both the primary and secondary devices. The primary and secondary reserved IP addresses are automatically selected from the subnet based on the rules defined in the IP assignment table below.
  • Public IP at LAN – When you select static public at LAN configuration for an HA site, a /29 subnet is automatically offered as the first available option to ensure that the IP assignment requirements are met.
  • Public IP at Gateway – HA sites support this configuration as well and follow the same IP assignment rules as private IP configuration.
  • DHCP Server – The DHCP server feature is currently not supported for the HA sites.

Router IP
The Router IP cannot be set to any of the last three IP addresses in the subnet block. This includes the broadcast address (last IP) and the two addresses immediately before the last IP. Additionally, the first IP address (network address) is also reserved and cannot be used.

Router IP + 1
Secondary Reserved IP
Router IP + 2

WAN Setup

The WAN setup for high availability (HA) sites differs slightly from that of non-HA sites. In HA configurations, both the primary and secondary devices connect to the same ISP connections via a switch, resulting in nearly identical WAN setups for both devices. The WAN connection details specified in service orders are applied to the WAN ports of both devices.

  • For DHCP links, IP addresses are dynamically assigned to each device’s WAN port.
  • Static IP link – For static IP links, you must manually configure the WAN IPs for both the primary (primary reserved IP) and secondary (secondary reserved IP) devices, ensuring that both IPs fall within the specified gateway and CIDR range. The smallest subnet supported for HA sites is /30, which provides enough IP addresses for proper configuration.
  • Wireless – In HA configuration, both devices must use the same type of wireless connectivity (e.g., LTE or 5G). The connections can be configured using the same or different service providers and may have similar or distinct configuration properties.

    Template Setup

In HA sites, templates are applied at the site level rather than to individual devices. As a result, configurations for App Prioritization, Traffic Steering, and Security templates only need to be defined once for the entire site, eliminating the need to configure them separately for each device.
